Residencies

The Veenweide Atelier started in 2023 with four exploratory design processes (residencies), led by artistic director and designer Henriëtte Waal.

Henriëtte Waal

Henriëtte Waal is designer, researcher and artistic research director at Atelier Luma in Arles. Working from a systematic approach and maker’s know-how, she deals with social and ecological problems. She designs new relationships between people and landscapes, and works on topics such as water, landscape, food, material and product development, bio-based construction, animals and ecology.

In 2023, together with Henriëtte, we selected three designers who have shown to be creative and to excel in the field of bio-based solutions, systemic design, and the application of nature-inclusive and social work processes. These designers have had their ‘feet in the Frisian peat’ for the past year. During this time, they developed cultural analyses and created their initial designs. They followed an eco-social approach: their work is based on consultations with farmers, policy officers, entrepreneurs, ecologists, peatland experts and nature itself. The design process is the catalyst for a change that one or more of these parties can implement. In the years to come, as a design collective, Veenweide Atelier wants to continue to work on practical pilots and test locations for the new peatland meadow landscape.

Veenweide Atelier embedded in the peatland meadow area
The designers’ residencies laid the foundation for the long-term Veenweide Atelier program. In an ideal future, the Veenweide Atelier will be embedded in the peatland meadow area and will be a physical place people can visit. Stakeholders know where to find the Atelier, and use it as a place to discuss ideas, gain inspiration and develop plans.

Feangreide Beraad
On January 24, 2024, Veenweide Atelier organized the first Feangreide Beraad, an in-depth program with the design residents and with experts on water, soil, grass and area processes. This Feangreide Beraad was the culmination of 1 year of design research in the Frisian peat meadow area. You can read the report of this program below.

Veenweide Atelier is made possible with support from Gieskes Strijbis Fonds.
