Gabriel Chaile: Brenda (2022)

Paradys

One of the remarkable sculptures by internationally acclaimed Argentinian artist Gabriel Chaile is on display at Bouwurk – a work that also functions as an oven. Chaile, who gained widespread recognition at the 2022 Venice Biennale, creates monumental figures built from brick and red clay. These towering “beings” evoke both pre-Columbian pottery and stylized characters from folklore.

Each sculpture carries a personal connection. The figure at Bouwurk is named Brenda – after Chaile’s sister. Sometimes these impressive forms act as silent guardians of cooking rituals, with large pots simmering nearby. At other times, they serve as fully functioning ovens, inviting people to gather, bake bread, and share culinary traditions.

Chaile’s ovens are both powerful artworks and social tools – sculptures that draw people together, ideally as diverse and intercultural as possible. During Arcadia, Brenda will come to life on several occasions. Keep an eye on the Bouwurk calendar to join one of these shared moments.
