Today, in 2025, Fryslân is flourishing. Twenty-six villages have already signed up for Fryslân Bloeit, and more and more are joining. For a week, these villages will be the shining centre of positive change. Every Bloom Week is an invitation to join in, share your thoughts and help build a more sustainable, more communal Fryslân together.
Through workshops, markets, walks, sustainable dinners and joint initiatives, villages showcase their journey to becoming greener, healthier and kinder. The themes are broad, but are relevant to everyone:
- Nature & biodiversity – from dew walks to food forests
- Mienskip & health – from the pop-up choir and community swimming sessions to communal allotments
- Sustainability & energy – from fossil-free commuting to fix teams
- Food & water – from local harvest festivals and healthy cooking initiatives to saving drinking water
a flourishing movement
Fryslân Bloeit is an initiative of Freonen fan Fossylfrij Fryslân, the Sustainable Communities Foundation and Arcadia. Each village has its own reasons for taking part, such as increasing biodiversity, strengthening the mienskip or creating greener places to live. Together, we want to turn Fryslân into a province that does not take more from the planet than it can give back.
The Bloom Weeks are not an end in themselves, but a starting point for real improvements in villages. Joining forces and working together gives rise to initiatives that don’t just create flourishing villages for a week, but make a lasting impact on the community. With inspiring events, villages show how we don’t only need a liveable and future-proof environment, but how it can also connect and inspire us. In Ferwert, for instance, an outdoor ice rink was built to literally get the community moving. In Akkrum-Nes, tiles made way for plants, as grey streets were transformed into abundant nature. In Wergea, residents opened their doors for a living room festival, as villagers shared their creativity with each other. Small gestures with a big impact, carried by the community.
