We’re building a remarkable place in the heart of Leeuwarden. Centuries ago, this place was home to a cathedral. Today, it is a temple for the imagination. Let’s finish the Oldehove together! Bouwurk will be a modern-day cathedral, a temporary mienskipshûs, a meeting place for shared imagination, wonder and encounters.
Bouwurk will be more than a building. It will be a living work of art with walls made of Fryske grûn (Frisian ground), a beautiful green nucleus and creative building blocks from across the province. Here, we’ll show the power of collaboration as we test new ideas, embrace ancient traditions and dream about the future. Everyone is welcome.
Bouwurk’s four building blocks
Bouwurk will consist of four special and unique spaces, each with its own atmosphere and possibilities. Together, these spaces will form a community centre buzzing with discovery, creativity and encounters.
Mienskip space – The beating heart of Bouwurk. This is where we share stories, eat together and forge new plans. This is the place where ideas come to life and people find each other.
Whitebox – A space for imagination and reflection. Amidst alternating exhibitions, presentations and art installations, visitors can come here to discover new perspectives and be inspired.
Oasis – Bouwurk’s green nucleus. An urban green space where you can relax, reflect and garden together. A place where the connection between human kind and nature comes to life.
Maker space – The place for action. This is where we work, build and experiment. From craft techniques to innovative creations, new forms of collaboration and craftsmanship emerge in the maker space.
