Step into Dovenland (Deaf Land): a virtual world without sound

Welcome to Dovenland (Deaf Land). A place where the deaf feel at home and you as a hearing person are warmly welcomed.

In this country, two languages are spoken. Dutch Sign Language is the most important and Dutch is the most important language for everything else that needs to be said. Step into this hybrid of VR (Virtual Reality) and theatre, technologically developed in collaboration with Jan Klug, to experience together the world in which you as a hearing person cannot easily make yourself understood. Sound and spoken language do not play the leading role, but communication does. How do you introduce yourself, or order a cup of coffee? Can you just tap everyone on the shoulder if you want their attention? As a member of this community, you step into a warm bath of recognition and see the daily subtleties magnified.

Dovenland is a Virtual Reality experience in which you can physically walk around. At a time, seven participants enter a virtual world, which is like an augmented reality layer in the real world. The playing field is marked by a carpet, where the participants enter a parallel world. Without sound, but with all kinds of layers of communication, with its own history, culture and people.

This event will take place in the White Box in Bouwurk on the Oldehoofsterkerkhof in Leeuwarden, Friesland.

Dovenland is a collaboration with Frisian and Groningen deaf organizations including Oorizon, Clubhouse for the deaf in Groningen, TYD and Geef het door NGT.
