Every bush describes a piece of Friesland
In the Noardlike Fryske Wâlden you will find all kinds of hedgerows, densely overgrown rows of shrubs and trees, a typical feature of this region. A natural way to separate meadows from each other. Beautiful to see and a fantastic habitat for birds, insects and small mammals. On the edge of Bouwurk you will also find such a hedgerow, with which we separate part of Bouwurk from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Hedgerows are an iconic feature of the Noardlike Fryske Wâlden National Landscape, a unique cultural landscape in Friesland. These centuries-old hedgerows, consisting of densely overgrown rows of shrubs and trees, separate the meadows and not only offer a beautiful, small-scale landscape, but also contribute to biodiversity and nature conservation. They form a valuable habitat for numerous birds, insects and small mammals, while at the same time providing shelter and food for livestock. In addition, tree banks help to retain water and reduce soil erosion, which is essential in this vulnerable area.
In addition to their ecological value, hedgerows are also of great importance for the preservation of the Frisian landscape and the agricultural culture in the region. The Noardlike Fryske Wâlden Association works together with farmers to maintain and strengthen these natural heritage pieces. This not only ensures sustainable agriculture, but also strengthens the identity of the Noardlike Fryske Wâlden as an area where nature and agriculture go hand in hand. By preserving hedgerows, this special landscape remains recognizable and valuable for future generations.
This event takes place in the Oase buiten in Bouwurk on the Oldehoofsterkerkhof in Leeuwarden, Friesland.
