‘We are not building a wall, but a longer table’
On Sunday 24 August, we will create Leeuwarden's longest table. A table of new encounters, culture and connection. Globally, higher and higher walls are being erected between people and cultures. In our safe, single-minded bubbles, we are increasingly alienated from each other. As a sign of hope and future thinking, that we still share more with each other than what divides us, in Leeuwarden we go together at the table. The longest table runs from Bouwurk to the Grote Kerk, along the entire length of the Grote Kerkstraat.
Old & new
Bouwurk is the creative and circular resurrection of the old St Vitus Cathedral, the church that stood on the Oldehoofsterkerkhof in the Middle Ages. At the end of the 16th century, the church was damaged beyond repair. The city council therefore decided at the time to expand the Jacobijnerkerk into the ‘Grote Kerk’. A modern City Cloister is currently being built in the Grote Kerk. In both places, that cathedral past is being revived. Historically, there is a connection between the two places.
This longest table re-establishes that ancient connection between Leeuwarden's two main churches. We reap what was sown and created during Arcadia in the weeks before.
All along the length of the table there will be soup from Arcadia and other delicious food - brought for each other by those who want it - music, performances, conviviality and good conversations. Bring your own chair or stool. Can't make it? Then email marijkeroskam@arcadia.frl and we will bring one for you.
We like to know how many people are coming, there is room for 1000 🙂
