BROEI

BROEI is the place where young makers aged 12 to 24 from Fryslân take the stage to bring their bold ideas to life. Over the coming months, sixteen talents will work on their own productions, guided by the BROEI team and professionals of their own choosing.

From theatre and music to film, literature and visual art. BROEI brings together a diverse group of young makers. As part of Arcadia, the BROEIers travel across the province to present their work. With a diverse group of young makers, including theatre makers, musicians, writers, filmmakers and visual artists, it promises to be a creative spectacle. 

BROEI is raw, fresh and innovative. Here, young makers get the space to experiment, grow and show Fryslân what they’re made of.

Sarah-Rebecca Andringa  Theatre maker Sarah-Rebecca (17) from Sneek is creating a cool performance together with a group of young people from the Waadhoeke region, where anything goes: acting, music, text, dance, or something completely different.	Charlotte Westra  Writer Charlotte (21) from Leeuwarden dives into an important theme: unequal opportunities and poverty, seen through the eyes of young people. She’s writing a performance, and she’s not doing it alone: she’s working together with young people and professionals.
Luisa Moreno  Colours say more to Luisa (16) than words. This young artist uses her palette to express her feelings. She explores what animals can make us feel or understand. Without words. Just like her paintings do. Have you ever seen a cow jump really high?	Guusje Hempenius  Guusje (19) from Leeuwarden is mourning the loss of a carefree childhood. She does this in her own way: with poems, photos and anything that inspires her. No boundaries, just pure expression. An inner journey through loss and beauty.
Rowan Vis  Rowan (17) from Leeuwarden has been writing ever since taking part in Explore the North and Meeuw Jonge Theatermakers. Now, for the first time, he’s bringing his own theatre performance to the stage, written and directed entirely by himself. His performers aren’t the only ones on stage; mannequins also play a big role in this comedy full of sharp observations and dry humour.	Collectief Lavendel Quirine (23) from Leeuwarden, founder of Collectief Lavendel, passionately champions the queer community and loves giving them a strong platform. And that’s exactly the space the performers take in their newest show: clownish and full-on. During Bouwurk, Lavendel performs a preview of Queeriosity. One thing’s for sure: this is only the beginning.
Berend Moed  Berend Moed (23, Leeuwarden) is making a film about the underbelly of Leeuwarden. Berend is a graphic designer and filmmaker. This time, he captures the underbelly of Leeuwarden in a stylish film noir. A sequel to his short film ‘Femme Fatale’, which you can see in Bouwurk. With layered imagery and a raw, aesthetic view of his city.	Lútzen Rijpma  Lútzen (19) has a great passion for music and musical theatre. It started with singing and piano, but by now he also rocks the guitar, bass and trumpet. At BROEI, he writes and performs his own one-act show, from start to finish. Everything self-made, everything from the heart.
Bastiaan Okkema  What started as playing around with a camera has grown into a serious ambition to become a filmmaker. Bastiaan (15) from Goutum is making his third film together with friends. Young, driven and curious about the best way to tell a story. In his newest work, generations come together. You’ll see old work and a sneak preview.	Mayte Veenstra  Mayte (19) from Húns shared her own self-produced Frisian-language music for the first time last summer. Soon after, she formed her own band and has been performing regularly ever since. This year, she worked on her production skills in a professional recording studio and returns with her band. With a live set that’s stronger than ever. Intimate, distinctive and in Frysk. Mayte’s music can’t be put in a box.
Marcille Marcille (24) from Akkrum is a producer and composer. She brings electronic, downtempo and ambient vibes to life. Sometimes with a hint of organic house. With her own vocals, instruments from around the world and sounds of nature, she searches for balance between nature and technology. It all comes together in the audiovisual show she’s developing for BROEI.	Settimia  Language, image, detail. Settimia (24) from Leeuwarden makes work that stops you in your tracks. With carefully chosen words, she turns language into poetry that carries you into the vulnerability of life. Alongside poems, an audiovisual representation of her work will be on show, touching on themes such as loss, longing and being human. Fellow BROEIer Marcille adds sound to strengthen her words.
Yusuf Kemal  Yusuf (22) from Heerenveen is a multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer. Six years ago, he moved from Turkey to the Netherlands. Through music, he tells his story. At BROEI, he explores how visuals and the neoclassical sound of his piano can strengthen one another. A performance that feels like a journey through memory and hope.	Fleur van den Berg  Fleur (19) from Sneek uses art to process and express her feelings. She experiments with materials like paint, clay and textile. She finds inspiration in exploring the process of change and personal growth. She’s creating an exhibition around the themes of self-discovery and the inner child. Fleur believes art can open something up, in yourself and in others.
Rixt Siderius en Milena Koetschruiter  What if the world keeps telling you how to be? Rixt and Milena (both 19) create a theatrical protest against expectations. From parents, from school and from yourself. As young adult women, they know that pressure all too well. With music, humour and courage, they tell a story that everyone can relate to. An energetic performance full of protest and a healthy dose of self-mockery.
