Het Verdriet van de Zuiderzee (The Sorrow of the Zuiderzee) is the successful music theatre production that was performed in August and September this year at the beautiful location of the Oudemirdumklif. Audiences came from all over the country to see this story about what was lost through the construction of the Afsluitdijk.
Our partner Arriva spoke to writer and director Geert Lageveen for their podcast. They look back on the production and the history behind it. He wanted to create something that stands right in the middle of our times, by looking at the past. Because if we don’t know where we come from, we also don’t know where we need to go.
What struck him was that many fishermen helped build the Afsluitdijk, effectively hastening their own downfall. In his view, that’s the essence of humankind, unable to look further ahead than a few years. Lageveen hopes that art (and so this production too) can help us make the effort to look further ahead after all.
