From 1845 to 1910, the Noordertoren and Zuidertoren lighthouses marked the island of Schiermonnikoog with their lights. In 1910, when the Noordertoren was fitted with a revolving lamp capable of illuminating the entire area, the white Zuidertoren became redundant and its light was extinguished. This tower now serves as the canvas for an artform – light art – which resonates with the tower’s original purpose.
For an entire year, light projections will be displayed at sunset. A new light art piece every two months. The tower will once again become a beacon. The six artists selected to participate, are: Femke Schaap, Jan van Nuenen, Gilleam Trapenberg, Jacco Olivier, Daphne Glasmacher and Jos Agasi. On 1 July 2022, Femke Schaap will set the ball rolling.
Beacon Schiermonnikoog will connect Arcadia 2022 and the Hi-Lo 2023 art manifestation. Hi-Lo is a new art manifestation situated around the Wadden Sea, commissioned by the Into The Great Wide Open festival on Vlieland. This first edition is a taster of all the amazing work to be seen in 2023.
