The Windstil (Windless) exhibition displays new work by visual artist Heleen Haijtema. She was inspired by the remarkable photographs of skûtsjesilen (sailing on flat-bottom boats) taken by the late Ger Dijs from Sneek. Dijs had a great eye for composition and plane arrangement, which also characterises Haijtema’s photography. For this series, she created installations in nature which resemble the shape of a sail, evoking the windless worlds she photographed.
Besides Haijtema’s new images, early works by Ger Dijs will also be on display. A selection of photos which he took in the 1970s and 1980s of skûtsjesilen as well as the presentation of prizes afterwards on dry land. Writer, poet and theatre-maker Joost Oomen wrote the text for Windstil. He grew up in IJsbrechtum and is intimately familiar with the surroundings in which skûtsjesilen takes place.
The photo exhibition is the first in a series by Mix Nederland and will help hoist the sails of an old Frisian tradition.
