The Frisian landscape we know so well, with its green pastures full of cows, was created by humans. Equally characteristic, though, are the peatlands where people used to dig up valuable peat. The soil in this landscape is now subsiding and water levels are rising. Which raises the question for us: how can we use the countryside in a way that allows farmers as well as the land and wildlife to flourish?

The Fries Museum has invited designer Christien Meindertsma to explore this issue and the Frisian landscape, together with international curators Laura Drouet and Olivier Lacrouts from studio d-o-t-s. At this exhibition they will display their work and continue sketching scenarios for the future.

The artists will work together with residents, researchers and organisations, who will all contribute significantly to preparations for the exhibition. Fertile Grounds is the start of a larger project that the Fries Museum will present in 2025, when Arcadia returns to Fryslân.
